From Blank Wall to Bold Statement: The Power of Murals in Spatial Storytelling
May 28, 2025

Once confined to street corners and gallery walls, murals have evolved into a vital part of interior spaces — bringing walls to life in cafés, offices, hotels, and retail environments. As spatial design continues to move beyond function into feeling, murals have emerged as more than decorative features; they’ve become a form of visual storytelling — shaping how people experience a space, interact with its identity, and emotionally connect with their surroundings.

Murals have the unique ability to become part of a visitor’s memory of a space. They’re often what people photograph, post, or point out. When designed with intention, they become landmarks within interiors — a point of recall that reinforces a brand’s identity or a space’s essence.

“People may forget the furniture, but they’ll remember the mural.”

At Stoked, we see murals not as a final layer, but as an integral part of the spatial narrative. A well-placed mural can transform the entire atmosphere of a room. It sets the tone — commanding attention or quietly drawing people in. It shifts moods, creates rhythm, and introduces texture that resonates beyond aesthetics. Unlike static artwork, murals move with the space — inviting people to pause, reflect, and sometimes, to start conversations they never expected to have.

We believe the strength of a mural lies not only in the hands of the artist but in the intent behind the design. That’s why our approach begins with a strong creative direction. For one of our recent collaborations, we partnered with local artist Shany Ahmed, whose work masterfully reinterprets traditional Malaysian batik motifs with a contemporary lens. Her language of flowing forms and layered textures spoke to the dualities we often explore in design — heritage and modernity, structure and spontaneity. Together, we developed a concept that married spatial flow with visual energy, ensuring that the mural didn’t just exist in the space, but belonged to it.

Our role went beyond curation. From initial ideation to composition planning, palette development, and integration with surrounding design elements, our team at Stoked provided full creative direction for the piece. Working closely with the artist, we shaped a visual journey that aligned seamlessly with the space’s purpose and personality. Every line and colour was intentional, tied back to a broader story about culture, place, and identity — the very principles that drive our design philosophy.

This collaborative process is central to how we approach mural art. We see it as a conversation — between art and architecture, artist and designer, client and community. Whether it’s an energising feature in a hospitality setting, a bold statement in a corporate lobby, or a subtle narrative woven into a retail environment, murals have the power to humanise a space, giving it both voice and soul.
